Contractor Quote Checklist

Use this checklist before comparing repair, restoration, roofing, HVAC, plumbing, pest control, remodeling, moving, or home safety quotes. The goal is to make every contractor price the same scope so the lowest number is not hiding missing work.

Quote checklist

  • Written scope with measurements, materials, and exclusions.
  • License, insurance, warranty, and permit responsibility.
  • Deposit amount, payment schedule, and change-order process.
  • Cleanup, haul-away, repair timeline, and access requirements.

Red flags

  • Large deposit request before materials or schedule are confirmed.
  • No license, insurance, warranty, or written scope.
  • Price is much lower because permits, disposal, or cleanup are excluded.
  • Pressure to sign before you can compare other quotes.

What a strong quote should include

  • Project description with measurements, affected areas, or system size.
  • Labor, materials, permits, disposal, cleanup, and warranty listed clearly.
  • Payment schedule and change-order process.
  • Start date, expected duration, access requirements, and cleanup plan.
  • Proof of license, insurance, and any required specialty certification.
